Especially the beans.....

After the joy, fun and deliciousness that was Chow Down to Eurovision 2013 it is time to resume normal Don't Boil The Sauce broadcasting. Winter has hit Melbourne in all it's time for blankie snuggles glory and I bloody love it!
I also love a dish that can be breakfast, lunch or dinner so no matter what time you finally get out from under the covers it's an acceptable time to eat it.
This will make enough beans to feed both sides of the army and some left over. It needs to be started a day ahead to soak the beans, or use canned for a super quick version.

Slow cooker beans
  • 2 cups borlotti beans dried
  • 1 cup haricot beans dried
  • 1 cup lima beans dried
  • 1 cup cannellini beans dried
  • 300g approx. pancetta
  • 2 tbsp. olive oil
  • 3 red onions rough diced
  • 3 brown onions rough diced
  • 4 celery stalks chopped finely
  • 3 garlic cloves crushed
  • 1 red capsicum rough diced
  • 1 bottle passata  (approx. 600-700ml)
  • 600g chopped tomato
  • 120ml red wine
  • 4 tbsp. Dijon mustard
  • 2 tbsp. mustard powder
  • 2 tbsp. honey
  • 2 tbsp. brown sugar 
  • 1 cup beef stock
  • 1 tbsp. salt
  • 3 bay leaves
  • 2 large sprigs rosemary
  • 1 small handful of thyme
  • Pepper to taste
  • Into a large mixing bowl or boiler of water add the beans.
  • Leave to soak for about 8-12 hours or overnight, they will double in size.
  • Drain the beans
  • Chopped the pancetta into small strips
  • Fry in a hot pan with 2 tbsp. olive oil
  • Add the onions, celery, garlic, capsicum, fry for about 3 minutes then add to slow cooker
  • Into the slow cooker add beans and all remaining ingredients and stir well
  • Cook on low for about 5-6 hours depending on your slow cooker and how mushy you like your beans
  • Serve as a side with a chili/pepper steak, with eggs and home made crumpets or just on their own.
  • You may need to add more salt depending on your taste, beans and pancetta, just remember you can add it but you can't take it away

  • You could do this in an oven for about 2-3 hours on 160°C but I haven't tested this

  • For the super quick version in a large pot add fry the pancetta, and vegetables as per recipe then add remaining ingredients and boil to reduce for 15-20 mins. Add drained canned beans and simmer for another 20 minutes (also not tested but this is how I would tackle it) 
  • ok now back under the blankie!!

Chow Down to Eurovision 2013 - The Party's Over Now..........but not for long

It's hard to believe but Eurovision 2013 has already been sung and won. Well done to Emmelie de Forest with Only Teardrops, see you next year in Denmark.

I thought we'd need a final Chow Down to Eurovision 2013 post before we continue normal programming, that is until Chow Down to Eurovision 2014.

Being truly committed to my craft not only did I record this bare foot like Emmelie de Forest but as a true professional I did it without pants too.
There are always superstitions and conspiracy theories that surround Eurovision and the Chow Down to Eurovision is no exception.
  • Azerbaijan who won the second semi final in Malmö also won the second semi final in the chow down.

  • Demark who won Eurovision was the dish I was cooking for the Chow Down when my oven broke, if I was able to read the signs I should have put a few bob on Denmark winning and that would have been the new oven paid for!!
Our final Eurovision hit to close off this year's Chow Down to Eurovision is from the Netherlands in  1976.

Chow Down to Eurovision 2013 - Malmö We Are One

I can't believe that the Chow Down to Eurovision 2013 is already nearly over for this year, it have been one of the most enjoyable projects I've done. The planning for 2014 is already underway but if you have a dish that you think should represent your country please let me know.

Don't forget to VOTE for your favourite country, still open till 19/5/12.

Every big event should be marked with a cake and Eurovision is no exception. After watching way to many episodes of Cake Boss my imagination runs wild.
Some of my past effort include, the running track cake for AB's Dad, AB's cat food cat, and the famous Jedward cake.

The Malmö We Are One cake is a towering celebration in cake, fondant, buttercream, lustre dust and with all good Eurovision act a reveal.

Malmö We Are One
This is the recipe for the individual cakes layers.
  • 100g unsalted butter softened
  • 100g caster sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 100g self raising flour
  • 2 tbsp. milk
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • a couple of drops of your choice of colour
  • Cream butter and sugar with electric beaters
  • Add eggs and beat
  • Add flour, milk, baking powder, colour and mix
  • Pour into greased 18 cm cake tin
  • Bake at 170°C for about 20 minutes
  • Let cool slightly in the tin, then onto a wire rack
  • Make sure they are completely cool before decorating, even wait till the next day.

Chow Down to Eurovision 2013 - Grand Final Recap

Here is the recap of all 26 dishes in the Grand Final fighting it out to be crowned the winner of Chow Down to Eurovision 2013.
You can vote for as many countries, and as many times as you like. 
In this contest you can even vote for your own country.
There is a glitch with the poll as I had set it to accept multiple countries in the one vote but you know sometimes this just don't work!!
If you hit refresh you should be able to add more votes so your favourite or even your neighbour wins.
Voting will be open till the 19/5/13 with the winner being announced after the Eurovision Song Contest have been televised in Australia.
