Chow Down to Eurovision 2015 - San Marino

Ciao tutti, oggi siamo in San Marino! There was no doubt with my love of Italian I would also find a place in my heart for the smallest principality to participate in Eurovision.

In 2008 San Marino first joined Eurovision with the song Complice from Miodio, they came last, so did not qualify for the final and sadly San Marino didn't return to the contest till 2011.

To be presented with this for lunch with a glass of vino or un caffe is one way to make me very very happy.

Piadina
Ingredient
  • 400g plain flour
  • 80g lard (or butter)
  • 150ml warm water
  • 7g salt
 Method
  • Combine all ingredients and knead into a smooth dough
  • Let dough rest for 30mins (wrapped in plastic)
  • Divide into 8 pieces
  • Roll each piece to about 1cm thick and 18cm wide (depends on the size of your frypan)
  • Fry in a medium to high frypan for 1-2 minutes each side till cooked through (adjust the temp to avoid burning)
  • Fill with your filling of choice, I can't go past rocket, prosciutto or capocollo, fresh pecorino and cherry tomatoes

Anita Simoncini and Michele Perniola are delightful as they spread their message of peace.

Composer Ralph Siegel urges the world's politicians to watch eurovision and listen to the messages of peace to create change in the world.

With Junior Eurovision participations under their belts Anita Simoncini and Michele Perniola have the experience to light up the Eurovision stage and possibly gain San Marino their second trip to the final.

Chow Down to Eurovision 2015 - Ireland

After seven victories in the Eurovision Song Contest, Ireland is hopeful that some crumbed offal will be enough for them to secure their first Chow Down to Eurovision win.

Just like today's dish our highlight of Eurovision past is a retro delight, long live Eurovision disco!

1981 saw Ireland send Sheeba with Horoscopes, they placed 5th.

These delicious crubeens came about when I found some beautiful trotters at the farmer's market and went about finding a country I could use them for. Not an everyday food but there are times when some hot crumbed fat just really hits the spot.

Crubeens
Ingredients
  • 4 trotters
  • 4 stalks celery chopped
  • 1 carrot chopped
  • 2 brown onions quartered
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 3 bay leaves
  • 2 litre beef stock
  • Flour
  • Eggs
  • Panko breadcrumbs
  • Oil for frying
Method
  • Wrap the trotters in cheesecloth like little mummies
  • Add vegetables, bay leaves, stock and trotters to a slow cooker
  • Cook for 4-5 hours
  • Take the trotters out of the stock and unwrap
  • Remove the bones from the trotters (be careful as they will be extremely hot...really hot)
  • Line 4 tea cups with plastic wrap
  • Place a trotter into the tea cup and tighten the plastic wrap to form a ball
  • Refrigerate overnight
  • Unwrap the trotters and coat in flour, egg and breadcrumb
  • Heat oil in a large saucepan
  • Fry each crubeen for 1-2 minutes then finish in the oven for 10 minutes on 180°C
  • You can skip the oil stage if you prefer and just bake for 15 minutes as they do splatter a lot!
  • Serve with mashed potato, beans and a tarragon butter

Brains.....Brains......

My mashed potato is actually mashed kohlrabi as I forgot to get potatoes.....but it really works.

Molly Sterling will be Playing With Numbers and a piano in Vienna, will she be able to take Ireland to victory number 8?

Chow Down to Eurovision 2015 - Lithuania

We start the journey of Chow Down to Eurovision 2015 semi final two in beautiful Lithuania, with a rhubarb cake you could manage to eat all by yourself...little by little!
Roll tape....

Laura and her lovers placed last in the 2005 semi final which is a totally unfair position as the song is quite catchy and that is some serious hair action going on!
Yes I have a lot  of hair envy with the guitarist...but I bet he can't grow a beard!

I adore rhubarb for it sharpness so when I found this recipe on Desert Wiki I had to try it and recreated it so that the sugar content didn't have you bouncing off the walls till Eurovision 2016!

Lithuanian rhubarb cake
Ingredients
  • 120g butter
  • 230g caster sugar
  • 450g self raising flour
  • 500g rhubarb
  • 60g self raising flour
  • 150g caster sugar
  • Salt
Method
  • Line a 20cm square spring form cake tin
  • Melt butter in microwave 1 min
  • Combine caster sugar and flour in a mixing bowl
  • Add butter and mix till it looks like "sand"
  • Put half into the cake tin and press down
  • Chop the rhubarb into 1-2cm piece
  • In a mixing bowl coat rhubarb with self raising flour, caster sugar and pinch of salt
  • Add the rhubarb mix to the cake tin
  • Cover with remaining "sand" and press down
  • Bake at 180°C for 60 minutes
  • Serve with a ridiculous amount of thick cream

Light top and crisp bottom with tangy middle AKA bliss!

Could This Time mean we will have Eurovision coming to us from Lithuania.....next time?

Monika Linkytė and Vaidas Baumila form another duet in the Eurovision 2015 lineup and cover the start of a relationship rather than the break ups as others have.

Lithuania is giving us fun with a capital F with a hook that goes round and round and round our heads and our hearts.

Will Monika get to lock lips with Validas one extra time in Saturdays final?

Chow Down to Eurovision 2015 Semi Final One Results

Good evening world, this is Amsterdam calling...

As previously mentioned Don't Boil the Sauce! is en route to Vienna to eat, sleep and breathe Eurovision...most importantly eat!!

I am beyond thrilled to announce that a major highlight of the Eurovision festival is the opportunity to perform at Euro Fan Cafe in the Song for Vienna competition.

You may have noticed that the posts for semi final two had stalled and this was due to a large amount of time going into this performance.

You don't blow opportunities like this!

If you will be in Vienna you can come to the Euro Fan Cafe on 22nd May and vote for me (please!!)

Performing on the same night is Hera Bjork who represented Iceland in 2010 with Je ne sais quoi. (I don't know which performance I'm more excited about!)

So onto the results of Semi Final One before cracking on with Semi Final Two. (27 hours on a plane/airport means I got stuff done)

The results were very, very close but congratulation goes to Moldova and their chicken and pumpkin placinte who managed to win semi final one from position one....is this a taste of what to expect in Vienna??

In 2015 there are two songs call Warrior but sadly we did manage to get a third called worrier!

Nina Sublatti will be the first Warrior before Malta presents their Warrior in semi final two.
Georgia's Warrior is strong and there is no mixed message Nina is a Warrior and if have any doubt she will sing another chorus to let the message hit you right between the eyes.

The video clip shows the "zena type" warrior images and a snake, yes a bloody snake, we all know how much I hate them!

Siri has picked a team when it comes to Warrior....she mustn't have issues with the snake!
